Whether or not the official story is true or not, I'm not going to comment on, but I'm surprised at the naivety of people on this thread.
For years I've always had Tony (and brother Ridley) down as two insiders working in the film industry with the purpose of pushing particular agendas.
Top Gun, Enemy Of The State, Spy Game, Crimson Tide, GI Jane, Black Hawk Down, Body of Lies to name some of the more obvious, are all blatant propaganda films. Many even advertise the fact. Man on Fire was another less obvious but particularly insidious and sadistic film I feel.
What are the chances of two, lets say unevenly talented, brothers reaching such heights in such an impossibly competitive industry? And don't you think it's interesting that both brothers made so many similarly themed films over a period of decades?
You don't even get a whiff of directing major Hollywood films unless you're fully willing to play 'the game'. Many top Hollywood directors are likely working for one of the agencies before they even think of becoming a director and are at some point simply manouvered into that position. It's the way the higher echelons of that industry work. If you think otherwise you need to get your thinking cap on.
